Keeping a clean and hygienic kitchen is essential for family health. Using natural and commercial kitchen cleaners as well as some easy cleaning ideas can really help.

A clean and hygienic kitchen looks great and is indeed, a pleasure to cook and eat in. However, cleaning and scrubbing countertops, cabinets and appliances should not take up the whole day. Here are some ideas on how to clean the kitchen easily and quickly by creating a cleaning schedule and using both natural and commercial cleaning products to maintain kitchen hygiene.

Basics of Cleaning a Kitchen

A cleaning schedule is a great way of keeping the kitchen clean and organized at the same time. Draw up a daily, weekly and monthly cleaning schedule based on kitchen usage and traffic. For instance, a family with small children may need more frequent cleanups as compared to a family with teenagers.

The basics of daily cleaning can include wiping and disinfecting countertops, washing and keeping away dishes, clearing out the trash, removing non-kitchen items and cleaning appliances that have been used. Reserve intense and heavy-duty cleaning of walls, ceilings, cabinets, appliances and kitchen décor for weekly and monthly cleanups and if possible, get other family members to pitch in with help.

Clean the Kitchen with Natural Cleaners

Natural kitchen cleaners are not only eco-friendly but are also cheaper to use than commercial cleaners. Salt, lemon juice, vinegar, bicarbonate of soda or baking soda are just a few examples of natural cleaning products that can be easily used to scrub away stains, grime and spots from countertops and cabinets.

According to Green Living for Dummies, using a small amount of baking soda sprinkled on a damp cloth can help clean countertops and appliances while regular distilled vinegar can be used to clean away grease and deodorize as well. The book recommends experimenting “with proportions and combinations of these natural cleaners until you find the ideal mix for cleaning every item in your house.” Once the right proportion is found, simply make up batches and decant into labeled spray jars and bottles.

Using Commercial Kitchen Cleaners

There are times when using a commercial kitchen cleaner is easier, quicker and definitely needed. For instance, scrubbing a soiled and stained standard oven clean is something that does require a heavy-duty oven cleaner. So, save time and effort by investing in some commercial kitchen cleaners that can do the job in half the time.

More Tips to Keep a Clean Kitchen

While kitchen cleaning is, indeed, a daily task, there are ways to make it easier and quicker by having a few things in place.

  • Create a cleaning caddy with everything that is needed to keep the kitchen sparkling – spray cleaners, scrubs, wipes, a spare toothbrush and cleaning rags.
  • Keep kitchen countertops free of clutter. Use countertops only for essentials and create storage for other items inside the cabinets.
  • Have family members rinse dishes and other utensils clean before placing them in the sink.
  • Remove items that don’t belong in the kitchen to reduce clutter and clear countertop space.

So, go ahead and create a cleaning schedule for the kitchen and stack a caddy with both natural and commercial cleaning products that will help to keep the kitchen free of germs, spots and stains. A clean and hygienic kitchen is a homeowner's joy, so use these cleaning tips and ideas to give the kitchen a good scrubbing and get it sparkling.
